FAQ & Facts

How much does the elephant eat per day?

Each elephant eats an amount equal to 10% of its weight daily. Their main food varies based on the local area. In the southern part of Thailand, they particularly enjoy pineapple leaves. Elephants spend 16-18 hours happily munching on their food each day. As a treat, we also provide sugarcane and bananas as snacks throughout the day.

Why does the elephant have a rope around its neck?

In Thai tradition and culture, when we have a new family member, we put on a small holy thread around one’s wrist or neck for a welcoming ceremony, depending on the area and village. Similar to elephants, we use this ceremony for luck and auspicious fortune.

What is the maximum age an elephant can live?

In the wild, elephants typically live to be 60-70 years old due to limited space and food, leading to conflicts among herds. However, under the caring hands of mahouts, domestic elephants can live up to 100 years. These caretakers play a crucial role in an elephant’s life, much like a cherished family member.

Where do the elephants come from, and why are they here?

Elephants at our shelter come from various places and arrive at different times. They used to work in challenging places like logging camps or entertain in shows. Here, our goal is to offer them a peaceful and comfortable home where they can rest without the need to work anymore.
